One in four new mums 'lonely'

by Desmond Busteed

The Netmums study has also found many 21st Century mums have become unwell because of the pressures they face and a lack of local community support.

Experts fear they could be at increased risk of mental health problems like post-natal depression.

Speaking on Premier's 'News Hour', Joy French, author of Ordinary Mum, Extraordinary Mission: A Book on Motherhood said: "One of things that I've always been involved in is toddler groups, and many many church and community organisations up and down the country run toddler groups."

Furthermore, over half of mums surveyed have or feel they may have suffered with postnatal illness with many not being able to discuss this with their partners and families.

Indeed, 35% say they feel stressed about their relationship with their partner, and those with relationship difficulties are even more at risk of suffering from depression.
