Olympic champion Peaty reveals pre-race Bible routine

by James Lewis

Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty has shared how reading the Bible is part of his pre-race preparation.

Peaty, who came to faith during a period of personal crisis after the Tokyo Olympics and has taken time away from the pool, regained the title of British champion in the 50m and 100m breaststroke at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships this week.

During an interview with Aquatics GB after a strong heat swim on Wednesday, Peaty was asked how he would recover and prepare for the evening’s final.

“Get an ice bath, go to the physio, read the Bible. Happy days!” he responded.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist thanked fans on social media for their support “through this whirlwind experience”.

He quoted Matthew 19:25-26: ““Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Peaty qualified for this summer’s European Championships and Commonwealth Games with the result at the London Aquatics Centre, his time ranking him as second in the world so far this year in both events.

The 31 year-old has previously spoken about how he turned to Christ after depression and alcoholism, turning to the Bible during challenging times. He has said the church community has helped him deal with the pressures and isolation of being an elite athlete.
