Nottingham church opens doors to mourners in wake of attacks

by Sophie Drew

A church in Nottingham has opened it’s doors to mourners in the wake of attacks on Tuesday morning that left three dead, including two students.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and remains in police custody.

The three victims have been named: Grace Kumar, 19, Barnaby Webber, 19, who were both students and Ian Coates, a school caretaker.

St Peters and All Saints Church, in the heart of the city, welcomed mourners wishing to pay their respects following the attacks.

The decision came after the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, Rt Rev Paul Williams asked the church if they would be willing to open their doors.

Rev Christopher Harrison told Premier Christian News: “The atmosphere is certainly subdued, very subdued.

“We're continuing the vigil, which started last night, which was attended by several 100 people last night.

“We are in the church at the moment and people have been coming in, in a steady flow or morning.

“They've been laying flowers, lighting candles.

He continued: “Some people have been clearly, deeply troubled, they've been tears.

“They've been people who have simply sat here for a long time. Messages, heart moving messages, on cards within the church.

“However they come, whatever their grief, whatever their sorrow, we're there for them – and God is, of course
