'My testimony is my healing': Disney star shares Gospel in speech after TV award win

by Sophie Drew

Disney Channel star Joshua Bassett has shared his Christian beliefs during a winning speech at the Kids Choice Awards.

The actor was baptised last month but received backlash for his involvement with Bethel Church, with some criticising him for the church's approach to matters of sexuality.

Bassett has previously publicly stated that he identifies as a member of the LGBT+ community.

Whilst he has publicly condemned Bethel's teachings, he remains undeterred from sharing the Gospel.

The 22-year-old, who rose to fame after assuming a starring role in Disney's "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series," secured the "Favourite Male TV Star" award.

After thanking his co-stars and crew, Bassett said: "I'd love to thank my Savior, Jesus Christ."

But he didn't stop there. Continuing, he went on to say: "I want to say something. There are a lot of people here who are burdened, broken-hearted, and have been beaten down by life."

"I'm here to tell you… for those of you who've lost hope, there's a very real God who loves you more than you will ever possibly know."

"His promise is peace and my testimony is my healing."

As he left the stage, he concluded with three short pieces of advice: "Remember: Forgive quickly, love freely and walk courageously."

"Love always wins in the end."

The performer was once hospitalised with septic shock, a condition he believes was brought on by stress.

He's previously said the illness left him unable to stand "for more than 30 seconds" and resulted in him sleeping "16 to 20 hours a day".

He's also spoken of being "routinely sexually abused" as a teen by an "older man" and of having daily panic attacks.
