MP calls on government to consider Boxing Day trading ban

Helen Jones, the member for Warrington North, is chairing a debate on the issue in Parliament after over 200,000 people signed a petition backing a ban.

The petition calls on Prime Minister Theresa May to bring about the change so that retail workers are "given some decent family time to relax and enjoy the festivities like everyone else".

Boxing Day is seen as one of the busiest days for retailers but critics say staff should be given more time off over the festive period.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 365,000 people in the UK retail industry worked on Boxing Day in 2014.

Speaking to Premier, Helen Jones called for a change. She said: "There is no doubt that very poorly paid retail workers are being exploited because the shops open on Boxing Day.

"By and large they don't get any extra pay any more, they're denied time with their families [something] we all take for granted."

The debate, which is taking place in Westminster Hall won't include a vote, but Helen Jones is hoping it'll lead to rethink on the issue.

"Politicians are very quick to rush and defend Christmas and rightly so," she said. "But if that's the case we ought also to allow other people in our society to be able celebrate it properly and at the moment that doesn't happen."

Helen Jones said the most likely way of forcing a vote in the Commons was for an MP to bring about a Private Members Bill.
