Marsha de Cordova MP has been appointed as the new Second Church Estates Commissioner, succeeding Andrew Selous.
As the Labour MP for Battersea, she is the first person of colour to hold the position. A long-time advocate for disability rights, she previously served as Shadow Minister for Disabled People and Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities.
Born with severe sight impairment, de Cordova worked for various charities before entering politics. She credits her Christian faith, discovered in her twenties, as central to her public service. She attends Holy Trinity, Clapham, and has spoken on issues such as structural racism and disability rights.
Speaking on her new role, de Cordova said she is "thrilled and honoured" to take on the post. "The Church of England is a core part of our national story and plays a vital role in our society. I look forward to working with fellow Commissioners and parliamentarians to further the Church’s work.”
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev Justin Welby, expressed his delight at her appointment, praising her parliamentary experience as invaluable in linking MPs with the Church. He also thanked Andrew Selous for his dedicated service, noting his strong Christian faith and commitment to public service.
He said: "His tireless work was always underpinned by his strong Christian faith and deep commitment to public service. I pray for him and his family as he embarks on life outside of Parliament, after more than 20 years of serving his constituents.”
Bishop Alan Smith, the First Church Estates Commissioner, highlighted de Cordova's wisdom, experience, and passion for equality as key strengths that will benefit the Church's mission.
In her new role, de Cordova will answer MPs' questions on Church matters, help guide its legislation through Parliament, and serve on the Church Commissioners' Board of Governors and the General Synod. Her appointment ends the longest wait for a Second Church Estates Commissioner since 1948. She will answer oral questions in the House of Commons next Monday.
