Christian footballer defies reprimand to display another Jesus message

by Anna Rees Green

Christian Footballer Marc Guehi has displayed a second message about the love of Jesus, despite receiving a reminder from the Football Association that personal slogans are forbidden.

At Tuesday’s game against Ipswich, the Crystal Palace defender wrote “Jesus loves you” on his rainbow captain’s armband. It came days after he wrote “I love Jesus” on it for Saturday’s match against Newcastle.

The armbands were issued as part of the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign, to promote LGBT inclusion in sport.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner responded by saying his captain is a "great guy" and "very respectful".

The FA says that under Rule 4 of its kit regulations, the rainbow flag relates to “respect” and “inclusion”, not politics.

Ipswich player Sam Morsy opted to eschew the band altogether, due to his Muslim beliefs.

Graham Daniels, Director of Christians in Sport told Premier that opting to wear the rainbow laces band, but also writing a faith statement, was a way for Guehi to show understanding for LGBT people as well as highlight his faith.

“There is a freedom to refuse to wear the band. What Mark has done is that he's saying, ‘I'm actually going to wear it, but I'm going to add to it.’”

The FA has said it will not follow up with formal action against Guehi, but will issue another reminder of kit rules to his club.
