Man who stabbed woman outside church feared his own murder, court hears

by Cara Bentley

Yodit Mogos, in her 30s, was attending midnight mass at St Margaret's Church in Walsgrave Road in Coventry on Sunday 8th April last year.

She left the church around 3am holding her son and was attacked shortly after. She managed to put her son down out of the way but was left bleeding on the ground.

Emergency services were called around 3:15am.

Mrs Mogos was in hospital for 44 days with serious injuries to her liver but did live.

28-year-old Yosief Weldemaryam has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after handing himself in to the police station and a psychiatrist has now told the court that he had paranoid beliefs and was delusional.

Psychiatrist Dr Sajid Muzaffar said Weldemaryam suffered from a "schizoaffective disorder, depressive type" and he believed he was going to be killed by the woman and her husband.

In a statement, Mrs Mogos said: "I don't hate him, I feel sorry for him. I am a good person, and I see the good in everyone. I have forgiven him in my heart."

The trial continues.
