by Donna Birrell

A 29 year old man who was attacking people outside a church in Moscow has been fatally shot by a bystander, according to Russian media.

The incident at the Church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women happened on Tuesday morning, I September when the man, who it’s reported had mental health problems, began throwing rocks outside the building.

Priests called the emergency services, but a female paramedic who attended sustained serious injuries after she was hit on the head several times with a shovel. A female church worker and a passer-by who tried to defend her, were also injured.

According to church employee Mikhail Sergeyev, a bystander then the shot the attacker who died at the scene. The shooter, who used a legally-owned rubber-bullet firearm was arrested.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the attacker had been attending church after struggling financially. People at the church said he’d been receiving medication for a psychiatric condition but “typically behaved calmly”.
