Man charged over worshipper stabbing on Easter Sunday

by Kelly Valencia

A man has been charged and is set to appear in court in connection with a stabbing incident outside a church in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police officers were called to Saint Stephen's Church at around 11am on Sunday, just after the Easter service had finished.

It’s understood the victim, a man in his 40s, was followed outside by a fellow Saint Stephen's Church member who then stabbed him in the abdomen.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains receiving medical attention but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Joseph Easom-Cooper, a 20-year-old resident of Dale Street in Sneinton, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and possession of cannabis.

Detective Sergeant Andy Buxton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the work of detectives and officers investigating this incident we have now charged a man.

“The victim remains in hospital with injuries not thought to be life-altering. We do believe that this was a self-contained incident and want to reiterate our earlier message that we don’t believe there to be a wider risk to the public.”

“I am pleased we have now charged a suspect in connection with this incident as we continue to progress our investigation.”

Easom-Cooper has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on 11th April.
