Man bailed after being arrested in connection with London church drive-by shooting

by Sophie Drew

A man has been bailed after being arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting outside a church funeral service in London.

It’s believed six people, including two children, were taken to hospital following the attack – a seven-year-old girl remains in life-threatening condition.

A 12-year-old girl suffered a leg injury but is expected to recover in full.

The 22-year-old man has been bailed pending further inquiries until mid-February.

The incident took place outside St Aloysius Church, a Roman Catholic Church, in Euston at 1.30 pm on Sunday.

Hundreds of congregants had gathered for a requiem Mass for Sara Sanchez, 20, and her mother, Fresia Calderon, who both died in November.

The churchgoers had moved outside to release doves when the attack occurred.

Speaking to Sky News following the attack, Fr Jeremy Trood said: “There are no words that can describe what had happened, and I can't imagine why anybody could possibly do such a thing.”

“There were hundreds of people in the church coming out. It was pandemonium."

He described rushing back into the church building to seek safety.

Met Police has issued a statement seeking information about a black Toyota that appeared to drive towards the church on CCTV footage, just moments before shots could be heard.

Superintendent Jack Rowlands said: "We believe the suspects discharged a shotgun from a moving vehicle, which was a black Toyota C-HR, likely a 2019 model or similar.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the force.
