London church deemed ‘historical treasure’ destroyed in massive blaze

by Tola Mbakwe

A huge fire has destroyed a heritage-listed church in north-west London.

Eighty firefighters responded to St Mark's Church in St John's Wood late Thursday night, taking three hours to get the blaze under control.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said no one was injured in the incident on Hamilton Terrace.

It took twelve engines and a 64-metere ladder, one of the highest in Europe, to fight the fire, which became under control at 2:22am on Friday.

“The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke in the local area and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed,” the LFB said in a statement.

The National Churches Trust describes St Marks Church as an “architectural and historical treasure”.

It adds that inside the two-storey Anglican Church, “you will find stunning mosaics, metal work and, in the chancel, highly decorative marble flooring. The church was built in the Gothic style to the design of Thomas Cundy II.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
