Leicester Cathedral to close until Autumn 2023 for restoration work

by Alex Collett

Leicester Cathedral has closed for major restoration work till Autumn 2023.

Work began in October 2021 on the £12.7 million restoration project in which repairs will be made and a new visitor and learning centre will be built.

The need for visitor facilities has grown more urgent since the reburial of King Richard III in the cathedral in 2015, after which visitor numbers increased tenfold.

The cathedral managed to raise the full amount needed for the works with the Dean of Leicester, Very Rev David Monteith, saying a big thanks goes to "the exceptional generosity of individual people, businesses, and organisations across the city and county, as well as support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other grant-making bodies”.

During the closure, a base will be retained at St Martin's House for Sunday worship, and weekday services will be moved to the nearby St Nicholas Church.

The choirs, clergy, and members of the cathedral community will visit parish churches throughout the city and beyond.
