Lecrae has made history as the first Christian rapper to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, marking a milestone for Christian hip-hop.
Tiny Desk Concerts have been around since April 2008. Launched by NPR's Bob Boilen and Stephen Thompson, the first intimate, office-desk performance was recorded with singer Laura Gibson on April 14, 2008, following a loud, disappointing concert experience. The series has since produced over 1,000 performances.
“I felt guilty when I mentioned this to the Houston-born emcee, only because it’s taken so long,” said Tiny Desk host and series producer Bobby Carter. “If we’re putting a spotlight on faith-based hip-hop, we had to start with Lecrae.”
According to Relevant Magazine, Carter said what has separated Lecrae from other artists who came before him was his refusal to modify his faith to appeal to mainstream audiences.
“His devotion is unapologetic and consistent through the lyrics," Carter said.
Lecrae played eight songs with a full band setup in the NPR office. He performed "Coming in Hot", "Die for the Party", "I'll Find You," and more.
Lecrae has won four Grammy Awards and was nominated for two more this year, marking his 10th and 11th nods for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.
