A recent review of Winchester Cathedral has revealed "significant failings in leadership and management".
In response, the Dean of the Cathedral, Very Rev Catherine Ogle, will step down immediately to hand over leadership to Vice-Dean Canon Roly Riem, who will oversee the implementation of the review’s recommendations.
The review, commissioned by Bishop Philip Mounstephen, follows the departure of the longstanding Director of Music, Dr Andrew Lumsden.
It identified "poor judgment, misunderstandings, and organisational culture issues" as key factors in the crisis, according to the Church Times.
In a statement, the Dean apologised on behalf of the Chapter to “everyone who has been hurt by the events of the last few months”.
Despite these challenges, the reviewers emphasised many positive aspects to the cathedral's work and leadership.
They recommend restructuring key roles in the music department, improving communication, and fostering a culture of trust and candor.
