Lancashire Church celebrates milestone 150 year anniversary

by Rachel Huston

A series of special events are taking place this weekend at a Lancashire church which is celebrating a milestone 150 year anniversary.

St James' in Blackburn which is known as 'The Church on the Hill' is marking the special anniversary with 4 days of celebrations.

The service will be led by the Vicar, Rev. Sarah Gill alongside the Bishop of Blackburn, Rt Rev. Philip North.  The Mayor of Blackburn, Councillor Brian Taylor and other civic dignitaries will also be there.

Before the church was built the site where it stands was used for digging clay bricks. A barrister donated the land so a new church could be built when the pit was no longer needed.

The main church building was completed in 1874 and cost £4200. 29 years later they added a tower. The tower is considered a local landmark and can be seen from far away as visitors enter Blackburn.

Historically, in the late 19th century people had begun to move out of town centres and there was a desire for christians in the area to have their own church. Before St James Church was built believers would meet together in the upper rooms of two hired cottages to worship.

It was only with the help of benefactors and donations from many people than enough money was raised to make the build.

Events of celebration include a community afternoon tea, the planting of a tree, an 'open church' where the local community is welcome to visit and the  aniversary service on Sunday 9th June.

The Vicar, Rev. Sarah Gill said on X: "It's a big weekend for us and we are looking forward to everything ahead. St James has served the people of Blackburn and shared the gospel message for 150 years and we want mark this important milestone well."

The service will be livestreamed and begins at 10.30am.
