Actress Kate Beckinsale is facing backlash on social media for rewording The Lord's Prayer in a bid to bring "good luck" to England in their Euro 2024 final against Spain.
In a 'prayer' posted on the BBC Sport X account, Beckinsale clasped her hands and said:
"Our Gareth, who art in Berlin, hallowed be thy Kane. Thy time has come, thy final will be won, in normal time, not extra. Give us this day our jammy win, and forgive us for criticising your tactics, as we almost forgive you for dropping Grealish. Lead us not into penalty shootouts, but deliver us from Yamal. For thine is the final, the trophy and the glory, forever and ever."
The 50-year-old actress then prepares to say "Amen" but is cut short as her mum bursts through the door singing "Vindaloo".
Many didn't see the funny side of the clip, with several calling it "blasphemous".
"You chose to make a mockery of a religious tradition for this? For shame," one person wrote on X.
"Seriously??" another added, while a separate user blasted the clip as "Blasphemy".
Another person added that they were "not sure it's appropriate to fiddle with the Lord’s Prayer like this".
Gareth Southgate's hopes for a major title were dashed after his squad lost 2-1 on Sunday evening, with goals from Spain's Nico Williams, Mikel Oyarzabal and England's Cole Palmer.
It was Spain's fourth European Championship title victory.
