Jurgen Klopp: 'God is real'

by Anna Rees Green

Jurgen Klopp has said that God is real, and that he’s never doubted his faith in Jesus.

Speaking on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast, the former Liverpool manager recalled how his mother used to pray at his bedside every night.

“This lady – my mom – prayed every night before going to bed. So, for me it’s the right thing to do,” he said.

“I never doubted it, to be honest, with all the information we get in life. God is real - for me. And Jesus, of course”.

Bartlett asked if he had been religious as a younger man.

“Everyone says I’m ‘religious’,” Klopp remarked. “I believe. I don’t know 100 per cent what ‘religious’ means, to be honest with you.”

It is not the first time Klopp has been outspoken about faith. In 2004, he told Kicker magazine: “Jesus Christ is the most important person in history. For me, this is an easy answer… In the end [of his life], he took all the sins on himself and was nailed on a cross… We don’t have to do it [paying for our sins], and this is a huge comfort.”

He also told fr-online: “To be a believer, but not to want to talk about it - I do not know how it would work! If anyone asks me about my faith, I give information.”

In 2024, Klopp stepped down as Liverpool FC’s manager, after a nine-year stint which saw them win both the Champions League and Premier League for the first time in 30 years.

He is currently the head of global soccer for Red Bull.
