John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, the Gettys and Kevin De Young to lead world in day of prayer, music and fasting for coronavirus on Saturday

by Cara Bentley

Saturday has been suggested as a day that Christians can pray and fast for our world by evangelical group The Gospel Coalition.

The day will start will personal prayer based on Psalm 27, be punctuated with community prayer with each person's church family at midday and end with prayers led globally online by Christian speakers and authors such as Jen Wilkin, Kevin De Young, Joni Eareckson Tada and John Piper.

Musicians Keith and Kristyn Getty will also lead everyone in sung worship.

The evening prayer time falls at midnight - 1am GMT but churches in the UK are planning to follow the same structure throughout the day.

Julius Kim, President of The Gospel Coalition, wrote on their website that: "Much has already been lost, and the uncertainty of what more can be lost-and when it will stop-leaves people deeply anxious.

"But we worship a mighty and sovereign God who is not helpless. We cry out to him in our distress because he is steadfast and unchanging - a mighty refuge in a world of storms."

He added that another reason to pray at the same time is to feel closer together as a global church: "I believe a day to fast and pray can provide a unifying opportunity for Christians around the world-especially in these days of 'distancing' and heightened scattering."

Preacher John Piper and women's ministry co-ordinator Melissa Kruger will lead prayers for families, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie and pastor John Onwuchekwa will leads the prayers for the economy and Presbyterian scholar Ligon Duncan and speaker Jen Wilkin will lead prayers for those who are suffering.

Julius Kim said: "On the eve of Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week, we hope this gathering will encourage and bolster the faith of believers everywhere."
