Jerusalem church leaders warn Liz Truss over dangers of moving UK Embassy

by Alex Collett

Senior church leaders in Jerusalem have added their concern over the possible move of the UK Embassy in Israel.

Prime Minister Liz Truss has hinted that she would consider moving the base from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

It's a move that would be deemed controversial as both Israeli and Palestinian leaders claim Jerusalem to be their capital city.

In a statement responding to the suggestions of a move, the Council of the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem said: "The very act of reviewing the placement of the British Embassy not only suggests that negotiated agreements regarding Jerusalem and the West Bank have already resolved the ongoing disputes between the involved parties-when in fact they have not, but also implies that no such negotiations are needed: that the continuing military occupation of those territories and the unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem are both acceptable.

"We cannot believe that this is the message that the British government wishes to send to the world.

"In view of these considerations, the Council of the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem regards this Embassy review as a further impediment to advancing the already moribund Peace Process."

While most nations use Tel Aviv as their base for diplomatic reasons, the US relocated to Jerusalem under the Trump administration.

Liz Truss has said she understands the "importance and sensitivity" of the location.

Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Vincent Nichols as well as Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby have already voiced their concern over a move and the consequences for lasting peace in the region.
