Jamaica has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the country with the most churches per square mile.

Figures published by the National Library of Jamaica showed there were around 2.75 churches per square mile, reflecting what Pure Jamaica Media described as a deep-rooted Christian identity across the island.

The report said the Caribbean nation, covering approximately 4,244 square miles, is home to more than 1,600 officially registered churches.

These places of worship represent over 100 Christian denominations, including Baptist, Catholic, Anglican, Seventh Day Adventist and Pentecostal traditions.

The actual number of churches was believed to be higher, as smaller congregations meeting in homes or backyards were not always formally recorded, according to Pure Jamaica Media.

The National Library of Jamaica noted that Christian devotionals were commonly held in schools, while churches continued to function as key centres for community life and social support.

Christian values have also been said to influence public discourse and governance.
