'I just don't know what the difference is': Patti LuPone compares Christians to Taliban over LGBT+ rights

by Premier Journalist

US performer Patti LuPone has stirred criticism after comparing Christians to the Afghan Taliban.

The Broadway star, who has a new role as a 450-year-old Sicilian witch in upcoming WandaVision spin-off Agatha: Coven of Chaos, was speaking on The View.

She made her remarks as part of a panel discussing the indictment of President Donald Trump.

LuPone described her frustration at the treatment of LGBT+ people by US politicians – particularly the Republicans.

During the discussion, she was asked about her thoughts on Florida governor and GOP presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis and his feelings towards the LGBT+ community.

She said: “That’s extremely upsetting.

“These are human beings. I could cry. They’re not harming anybody.”

“I don’t know why he’s doing this. I don’t know.

“I’m going to get in trouble. I’ve said this before, it’s been in print: I don’t know the difference between our Christian right and the Taliban is. I have no idea what the difference is.”

“I just don’t know what the difference is,” she continued. “What is happening in this country right now in the name of religion is so dangerous.

“It’s not this country. “

Her comments have drawn criticism from Christians in support of Donald Trump and the Republican party.

Trump is currently at the centre of a legal storm over supposed hush money payments to an adult actress during the 2016 presidential election.

One Twitter used branded it “pure wilful ignorance,” whilst another said her politics was “so repulsive”.
