'He wants to be arrested': Donald Trump's indictment unlikely to have an effect on the Chistian vote

by Sophie Drew

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted on criminal charges after allegedly sending hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence – but will this deter Christian voters?

Trump has been immensely popular among Evangelical voters throughout his political career, despite a number of controversial revelations about his personal life.

Trump claims the new allegations are simply “political persecution,” and denies any wrongdoing.

According to Greg Swenson from Republicans Overseas, the latest allegations aren’t likely to have an effect on the views of churchgoers.

He told Premier Christian News: "In 2016, it didn't seem to hurt him. There was plenty of baggage that the president had prior to the election in 2016.

"Many of us thought the evangelical vote would not support him, but they ended up supporting him.

"I think they just took the view that 'the president's not my spiritual advisor. He's not my minister. We want results.'

"They had been disappointed with prior Christian presidents like George W. Bush and so they wanted change and they were able to hold their nose to the personal baggage and vote for him anyway."

However, Swenson recognizes that, eight years on, the Trump Train may be on its last legs: "There might be some Trump fatigue. They might say that, even though they knew about this already, it's bringing it up again- the president's reckless personal behavior.

"He's almost his own worst enemy with this kind of stuff."

Despite uncertainties about how voters feel, Swenson is confident Trump himself will be enjoying a return to the scandalous spotlight. He said: "I think it helps him. He loves this stuff.

"He wants to be arrested. He wants it on the front page of the paper and he's getting it. This works for President Trump. Prior to the Mar-a-Lago raid, Trump was polling nine points over DeSantis.

"After the Mar-a-Lago raid, he was polling 39 over DeSantis. This helps Trump not only with getting voters behind him because of the politicization of the justice system, but also it helps with fundraising.

"So this is helping Trump in the near term."
