The family of a Christian man who was tragically killed while helping an unconscious woman on the street has paid tribute to his life.

Chris Marriott, 46, was hit by a vehicle while helping an unconscious woman in Sheffield with police praising him as a “Good Samaritan”.

Hassan Jhangur, 23, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield magistrates' court today charged with the murder of Mr Marriott.

In a statement, via South Yorkshire police, the family described Mr Marriott as someone who “devoted much of his life to helping others”.

"The circumstances of his death, although tragic and unfathomable to us his family, show the sort of man he was - to go to help rather than to turn away.

“Chris was also a man of faith who wanted others to also experience the joy he had found trusting in Jesus. We take comfort in these most difficult of times in our belief that he is with his Lord and Saviour, while we mourn his loss.

"We would urge anyone with any information to share this so that we can understand better the circumstances in which he died.”

Mr Marriott worked as an IT manager for the Community Money Advice (CMA) charity and was a member of City Church Sheffield.

CMA’s chief executive Heather Keates said the whole team was "heartbroken".

"It genuinely feels like we've lost a family member," she said

She said the fact he was helping someone when he died was "Chris all over".

"He saw someone that needed some help, he didn't put his own safety first. It was typical of who he was as a man."

Janghur was remanded in custody and will appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 2nd January.
