'Happy Birthday Richard' trends on Twitter for Rev Richard Coles after difficult year

by Premier Journalist

Reverend Richard Coles, known for being in The Communards, on BBC Radio 4 and on Strictly Come Dancing has been wished a happy birthday by fans after a difficult year.

Rev Richard Coles posted a picture on Twitter of his breakfast, with the caption: "It's my birthday: fifty-eight, widowed, lonely, locked-down, straightened, and fat - but NO ONE can take my kippers."

Rev Coles' partner David Coles, who was also a priest, died last year at the age of 42 after being cared for in Kettering General Hospital, having been ill for a long time.

J.K. Rowling wished him a happy birthday as well as Sherlock actor Mark Gatiss and LBC's James O Brien, who posted: "Happy Birthday Richard. You bring comfort & happiness to many, many people & we all hope you find a bit of both today."

Fans also tried to help him feel loved, saying: "Happy birthday Richard. You have brought me many smiles, even though we've never met, & I live in a different country. Thank you very much."

"Happy birthday Richard!!!! Your tweets brighten up the gloomiest of days... wishing you a beautiful day"

He also received birthday wishes from the University of Nottingham, of which he is Chancellor.
