After England’s World Cup dream ended in late heartbreak, defender Marc Guehi once again responded in prayer.
The 25 year-old dropped to his knees, just as he has done after Three Lions victories through the tournament.
Son of a church leader, Guehi is known for inscribing Bible verses on his boots, such as Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon formed against you shall prosper”.
“It’s easy to praise God when you win. It’s much harder when you’ve just lost the biggest game of your life”, a post from football ministry Ballers in God said, “faith isn’t just for victories, it’s for the valleys too.”
Argentina scored two late goals to win the semi-final 2-1. Enzo Fernandez fired home the winner from outside the box, also celebrating by kneeling and pointing to the sky.
“I thank God for these moments, so all the glory for him”, Fernandez told reporters.
Keith Hammond, director at Christians in Football, took inspiration from Philippians 3:14 in reviewing the game with Premier Christian News: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
“You’ve got to press on. From the 55th minute, we had 12% possession. You can’t win a football game like that.”
