Government backs Premier's DAB radio deal

by Desmond Busteed

The announcement was made on Friday after months of negotiations which saw the issue raised in a debate in parliament, as fears mounted the station would cease broadcasting on digital radio from March 31 and be replaced with a pop music provider.

In an unprecedented move, Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries made a statement in the Commons during the debate urging Arqiva to "do the right thing" by Premier and in the interests of radio diversity.

Speaking to the station on Friday following the announcement, Mr Vaizey said: "Premier Christian Radio's a very important radio station with a lot of devoted listeners, and therefore I really wanted to impress upon Aqiva that while it was important for them to do the right thing commercially, they needed to see beyond that and do the right thing by Premier Christian's wonderful audience."
