Spanish singer Rosalía has said she was turned away from a church in New York after arriving for its Sunday service.

The Grammy-winning artist was speaking to US chat show host Jimmy Fallon while promoting her latest album and world tour.

When asked about how she is using her free time, she said she had decided to attend Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem after hearing about its Sunday services.

“I woke up and I decided I was going to church,” she said.

Rosalía said she got dressed up for the occasion, putting her “church heels”, a modest cardigan and perfume before joining a queue outside the church.

But after waiting in the cold, she said she was told the church was full and she could not enter.

“So yeah, I got rejected by the church,” she joked.

Asked what she did afterwards, Rosalía said: “I went and I bought some new shoes.”

She later added: “God said no, but my outfit said yes.”

The singer has spoken extensively about her spirituality in recent interviews, particularly in connection with her latest album, Lux.

She said her grandmother introduced her to faith as a child and would pray with her, her sister and cousins before they went to sleep.

“My first experiences going to church was with her,” Rosalía told NPR. “She was the one who put me into God.”

She has also spoken about having “a very personal connection and relationship with spirituality and with God”, saying she felt making Lux was a way of giving something back to God.

In March, she said she had been praying for about five years and prayed the Lord’s Prayer every night before going to sleep. She said she felt “something that is above” protected her.

However, Rosalía has said her spirituality draws from several religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism.

She has described mysticism as the inspiration behind Lux, saying she wanted to explore “what is my truth, what is my faith”.

Despite missing the service in Harlem, Rosalía said she hoped to return.

“One day, I really hope I can enter you again,” she told the church, speaking to Fallon.

And her response to the rejection?

“God said no, but my outfit said yes.”
