The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has confirmed that Gaza’s only Catholic church, the Holy Family Church, was struck during an air raid on Thursday, injuring several people, including the parish priest, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli.
Initial reports from Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City claimed that two women had been killed in the blast. However, the Patriarchate has clarified that, at present, there are no confirmed fatalities, although injuries were sustained and the church building was damaged.
Fr. Gabriel, an Argentine priest who frequently speaks with Premier, is known for his pastoral ministry amid the conflict. He reportedly suffered minor injuries to his leg. Italian news agency ANSA noted that he has been a regular correspondent with the late Pope Francis, providing updates on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The Vatican has not yet issued a public statement. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said it is investigating the incident.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the strike and held Israel responsible, stating: “The attacks against the civilian population that Israel has been carrying out for months are unacceptable. No military action can justify such an attitude.”
The Holy Family Church has long served as a shelter and spiritual refuge for Gaza’s small Christian community, which has been under strain due to ongoing conflict. The Latin Patriarchate has called for prayer and peace in the wake of the incident.
