With ballots still being counted to determine the next president of the United States, a former faith advisor to Barack Obama has said that Democratic challenger Joe Biden may have garnered as many as four million votes from the evangelical community - a key demographic tipped to greatly favour Donald Trump at the polls.

Michael Wear, who served in the White House faith-based initiative under former President Barack Obama, tweeted that among white evangelicals, he was seeing a "swing nationally of well over 4 million votes" to Biden. 

"It is possible that this swing will account for Biden's entire margin of victory in the popular vote," Wear added. "And esp since white evangelicals held at 27% of the electorate, the idea white evangelicals have remained "basically the same" should be firmly rejected based on available data." 

In 2016, Trump famously achieved 81 per cent of the white evangelical vote. According to a number of recent exit polls on the 2020 election, Trump's support in this particular demographic has fallen by five percentage points to 76 per cent. Biden's support was at 23 per cent amongst white evangelicals, which is a marked increase from the 2016 election when Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won just 16 per cent of these votes.
