A former Church of England vicar has stepped down from public ministry after being sentenced for sexual assault following an incident at a social gathering.

Robert “Bob” Weldon, 68, who previously served at Holy Trinity Church in Folkestone, admitted to inappropriate behaviour towards a woman after consuming alcohol at an event last year.

The court heard Weldon attempted to kiss the woman without consent, causing her significant distress, particularly as she had a history of past trauma.

Weldon, a former police officer turned clergyman, pleaded guilty and has taken a religious vow to abstain from alcohol. His legal representative said Weldon showed deep remorse and had no prior convictions.

The court imposed an 18-month community order, including rehabilitation sessions and unpaid work.

Weldon will also be subject to restrictions under the Sexual Offences Act and a two-year restraining order.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Canterbury confirmed that Weldon will not return to public ministry, saying: “We are aware of the sentencing of the Revd Bob Weldon and can confirm that he will not be returning to ministry in the Trinity Benefice.”
