Former government minister claims she's been ignored by C of E over sexual abuse allegations

by Sophie Drew

Nadine Dorries has re-shared allegations of abuse committed against her by a former Anglican priest, who has since died.

The UK's former Culture Secretary was reflecting in a national newspaper, on the recent review commissioned by the Church's National Safeguarding Team and carried out by Jane Humphreys, which was published last week.

The review found senior figures - including the former Archbishop of York, Lord Sentamu, and the Bishop of Oxford, Rt Rev Dr Steven Croft, then Bishop of Sheffield - had failed to act appropriately in 2012 and 2013, when allegations came to light of sexual abuse committed by another priest against a 16-year-old in the 1980's.

In her Daily Mail column, Dorries claims to have been ignored by the Church of England after sharing her own testimony of child sexual abuse, at the hands of a different Anglican priest.

She describes being invited to the House of Lords to speak with two bishops in 2015, after writing about her experiences in a novel.

She was offered counselling and claims the unnamed bishops assured her that an investigation would be launched.

The priest in question has now died.

The politician claims that she never heard anything following the meeting, describing it in the paper as “silence, from that day to this.”

The Church of England has released a statement in response, claiming that they reached out to the MP on multiple occasions during the intervening years, in 2018 and again in late 2022, although they admit that Ms Dorries should have received better treatment when she first came forward.

A Church of England spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the National Safeguarding Team has been in ongoing contact with Nadine Dorries following her brave disclosure of childhood abuse by an Anglican vicar, now deceased.

“We have offered support and have left open the offer to speak further so the Church can learn lessons from this case.

“We are sorry that when the matter first came to the Church’s attention in 2015 that she did not experience the response she should have received.”
