First female bishop of London to be installed

by Tola Mbakwe

The ceremony will take place at St Paul's Cathedral and will make her the 133rd bishop of London.

In 2015 Bishop Sarah took up the role of Bishop of Crediton in the Diocese of Exeter. She was also previously Chief Nursing Officer in the Department of Health and trained for the ministry at the South East Institute for Theologian Education.

The Ven Luke Miller, Archdeacon of London, told Premier Bishop Sarah brings a wide range of qualities to the Church of England.

"She comes to us as somebody who's been a woman of prayer and a committed Christians since she was 16. She's somebody who worked in a very high level of administration and her role as chief nurse which brings the administrative skills and the strategic vision that the diocese is going to need.

"She comes as somebody who is also able to deal with individuals and talk to children and grownups..."

When Bishop Sarah's appointment was announced last December she said: "... I have always had one vocation: to follow Jesus Christ, to know him and to make him known, always seeking to live with compassion in the service of others, whether as a nurse, a priest, or a bishop."

She succeeds Rt Rev and Rt Hon Richard Chartres KCVO, who retired as Bishop of London last year.
