First audio Bible recorded solely by women launched

by Sophie Drew

For the first time, an audiotape of the New International Version of the Bible has been recorded by UK women alone.

Her Audio Bible was officially launched as part of International Women’s Day, on the 8th of March, and will initially include the four gospels and Revelations.

From there, each book will be released on a month-by-month basis via a range of streaming platforms, including Spotify.

The audio book is the brainchild of Katy Partridge, a Church of England curate. Speaking to Premier Christian News, she said: “These are not celebrity voices, these are women with a wide range of accents and backgrounds.

“The heart of the project is to represent something of the beauty of the diversity of the women across the UK, and to give them a voice.

Reflecting on the reasoning behind the project, she continued: “Growing up, I didn't have female voices at the front.

“So the message that that fed down to me, even as a young person, was that perhaps my voice wasn't as powerful or as valuable, or perhaps even my voice wasn't as included, even in Scripture. “When I went to theological college, it was around 2017, and at that point, there were no audio Bibles voiced fully by women that were freely available.

“Even ow there are about between 700 and 800 audio Bibles across the world, and only eight voiced fully in women's voices.”

The project was run by a group of volunteers following a call for audition tapes last year.

Audio Bibles have been cited as a great alternative for those that struggle to read, or would not be able to own or acquire a Bible in book form.

The Her Audio Bible will be available for free, and will be launched via Instagram Live at 7.30pm, as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
