Football fans are sharing prayers and tributes following the death of Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash at the age of 28 alongside his brother, André Silva.
Just three weeks before the accident, Jota married his childhood sweetheart and the mother of his three young children, Rute Cardoso, in a Catholic ceremony. His brother, Silva, was also a professional footballer, playing as a striker for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
The brothers were reportedly en route to a ferry port in the Zamora region of Spain when a tire on their Lamborghini blew out, causing the vehicle to crash and burst into flames.
Christian football fan page Ballers in God paid tribute, writing: "Jota was a gifted footballer, but most importantly a son, a husband, a father, and a friend."
The post continued: “It’s moments like this that remind us life is fragile, but God’s love and His promises remain unshaken. The Bible tells us, ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’ — Psalm 34:18.”
Fans have posted tributes across social media. One wrote: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”
Another shared: “Titles, trophies, and all accolades will perish, but God's promise of eternal life to all believers will always stand.”
One Manchester United fan posted: “As a Man U fan, I send my deepest condolences to all his family. Also, as a man of faith, I believe that our Father will comfort his family at this time.”
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who signed Jota from Wolverhampton in 2020, shared an emotional tribute:
“This is a moment where I struggle. There must be a bigger purpose, but I can't see it. We will miss you so much. All my prayers, thoughts, and strength to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends, and everyone who loved them. Rest in peace — Love, J.”
