Emmerdale vicar: people think I'm a real clergyman

He's leaving the programme after 20 years as one of the most famous television clergymen.

The 62 year old says he's goingwith fond memories but won't miss some aspects of the job.

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: "I've had some bizarre fanmail."

"I get confessionals and people expect me to have solutions to their problems. I'm quite frank with them and say I'm not a vicar.

"I even got a letter from 'God'. I didn't reply because the one thing we know about God is that he's omniscient so he'd know what I was thinking."

His character is currently coming to terms with dementia but it's unknown how he'll exit the show in a few months.

His next move could be of stark contrast to his current role.

"I'd love to play a villain, any actor would tell you that," he said. "And I'd still love to do theatre where I cut my teeth. But I wouldn't want to do another soap because it can be exhausting."
