Don't split, senior Catholics tell the Church

The comments come during Pope Francis' Synod at the Vatican, where bishops are discussing family matters.

The most contentious topics discussed include homosexuality and whether those who remarry should be allowed to take communion.

Rogelio Livieres Plano, a former bishop in Paraguay, told The Telegraph that some leaders in the Church are trying to "divide and confuse the people of God".

Monsignor Plano was removed as the bishop of Ciudad del Este last month because of what the Vatican called "serious problems with his management of the diocese, the education of clergy and relations with other bishops".

He is also alleged to have protected a priest accused of child abuse.

American Cardinal Raymond Burke has also urged against a more progressive view regarding homosexuality.
