Disability campaigner Heidi Crowter breaks Guinness World Record

by Sophie Drew

Disability campaigner Heidi Crowter has made it into the Guinness Book of Records after recalling a record number of celebrity birthdays in 3 minutes.

Heidi, who has Down Syndrome, has been campaigning against legislation that allows foetuses with Down Syndrome to be aborted up until birth.

Her case was unsuccessful in the British courts earlier this year; she is now elevating the matter to the European Court of Human Rights.

Alongside her legal battle, Heidi spent hours practicing her ability to recall notable birthdays.

The project was inspired by her long-time love of birthdays – both her own, and others.

Heidi chose 100 celebrities – all from a Mencap list of people with learning difficulties – and memorised them, after months of practicing in the car with her mum.

The staff at the Guinness Book of Records then put the dates into a randomiser and asked Heidi’s mum to read the new list.

Heidi had to recall 30 celebrity birthdays in 3 minutes, which she achieved to great success, earning her a highly-coveted framed certificate and a firm place in next year’s edition of the Guinness annual.

Speaking to Premier, she said: “I was really happy and it made me feel like I could do anything that I set my mind to.”

When asked what she would like to achieve next, she said: “to challenge people’s misconceptions about down syndrome.”

The record was part of Guinness’ drive for greater inclusivity for those with learning difficulties.

The record category is part of the brands new impairments initiative, developed alongside Mencap, the learning disability charity.

Heidi’s record was announced to mark the start of Learning Disability Awareness Week.
