The Bishops and Archdeacons of the Diocese of London have released a statement reaffirming their support for the global fight against climate change, ahead of 'The Big One' climate change protest next month. The statement backs the Church's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, twenty years ahead of the UK Government's target.
Earlier this year, the Diocese of London Bishop's Council voted to disinvest from fossil fuels.
The Church has already made significant progress in reducing its carbon emissions: churches in the diocese have cut their annual emissions by 35% since 2005, while schools have achieved a 28% reduction and diocesan offices have seen a 40% drop since 2019.
In their statement, the leaders expressed their "heartfelt compassion for and solidarity with the communities and people suffering from disasters caused or made worse by climate change and damage to the natural world." They emphasized that many who are suffering the most are part of the Global South.
The Bishop of London, the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, commented on the Church's commitment to sustainability: "As stewards of God’s creation, we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to act sustainably and protect the world we live in. Across the globe, we are already seeing the impact of climate change affecting lives and communities, particularly in some of the poorest parts of the world.
"Motivated by our own faith and our care for all of God’s people, we are committed here in London to reducing our carbon emissions as far and as fast as possible."
The Diocese of London leaders urged governments, businesses, and civil society to collaborate in addressing climate change. They also called on the UK Government to implement the Skidmore Review 'Mission Zero' and create a detailed plan for the country's transition to net zero carbon emissions.
As they work towards their goals, the Bishops and Archdeacons of the Diocese of London say they will continue to pray for God's blessing on their efforts and trust in His promise to bring healing to creation.
