An 81-year-old has been confirmed as the driver involved in the crash that resulted in the death of a vicar and his wife in North Wales.
Humphrey Pickering, a retired librarian from Colwyn Bay, Conwy, reportedly swerved to avoid a horse-drawn carriage before his car struck pedestrians Stephen and Katherine Burch in Beaumaris, Anglesey, the BBC reports.
All three died at the scene after the car collided with the couple and a nearby property.
During an inquest, senior coroner for north-west Wales Kate Robertson said: “A motor vehicle driven along Alma Street in Beaumaris by Humphrey Pickering has collided with two pedestrians, Katherine Burch and Stephen Burch, and then with a property. All passed away at the scene.”
The provisional cause of death for Mr and Mrs Burch, was listed as multiple injuries, while Mr Pickering, who was pronounced dead by an air ambulance paramedic, died from chest injuries.
Ms Robertson stated: "Investigations into the collision that tragically claimed these lives are still ongoing."
The Burchs, both retired, were well-known for their work in the Diocese of Coventry.
Stephen Burch had served as a vicar for over 35 years, while Katherine was involved in church worship ministries.
According to the outlet, a witness recalled hearing a "loud bang" and seeing people desperately attempting CPR on the victims, in a normally peaceful, tourist-filled town.
