Churches ready to welcome rugby fans

by Hannah Tooley

The World Cup will last four weeks and is held every four years.

This year games are being hosted across the country, including in Twickenham, Manchester and Leicester.

David Chawner from Engage, a Christian group that works in sport, told Premier they want to use this event to reach out to Christians in the wider community: "What excites me is when people begin to get that vision, that we don't just sit in our churches planning our programmes and hope that people will come to those, we actually go out to where they are and engage with things that interest them and through that we engage with them and through that we have opportunities to share the gospel with them."

He added that it is a good way to get local churches involved in other sections of society: "Some people say 'I'm not interested in sport' or 'I'm interested in sport, but I'm not interested in rugby'. That doesn't matter, they're people involved... so we can share their interest as it were.

"Paul said 'I've become all things to all men', well why not become interested in rugby during the Rugby World Cup, it's an interesting way of getting to know people."

Mr Chawner said that Engage has been working with churches to set up quizzes, screenings and family fun events to celebrate the games.
