A church in Leicester has turned its tree stumps into symbolical sculptures.

After being told trees in their churchyard had become unsafe, St Peter's Church, Oadby decided to make wooden sculptures with them as they needed to retain the trunks to prevent ground heave.

Peter Leadbeater, a Leicestershire-based wood sculptor, turned one trunk into a pair of praying hands and the other into a series of animals representing the life of St Peter.

The praying hands sculpture is design to represent the church praying for the community.

Rev Jon said: “We really are at the heart of Oadby and amid whole generations who were baptised, married, and had their loved ones’ funerals here. It’s quite fitting that we’ve created this place for people to pray, reflect and remember here.”

The praying hands carving has a memorial bench around it with the names of people who have been a significant part of the church over the years.
