A church in York has set up a 'ribbon wall' in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. 

St Mary's Church, in Haxby, is inviting people to tie ribbons to the church wall - in the colours of the Ukrainian flag - alongside prayers of peace. 

The church was inspired to start the installation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last month.

A spokesperson for St Mary's Church said that they wanted to offer a free alternative for those that are unable to donate money or goods.

It's believed more than 3.5 milllion refugees have already fled the country.

Churches are being urged to assist with the refugee crisis, as the UK opens it's doors to families seeking homes. 

Those wishing to seek asylum in the UK will require the invitation of a host family. As Ukraine is a predominantly Christian country, faith-based homes are particularly sought-after. 

Many churches are encouraging parishioners to open up their houses to displaced Ukrainians; the Homes for Ukraine scheme officially opened on Friday, March 18. 

More than 100,000 people from across the UK have already signed up to the scheme. 

The Church of England has put together a 'toolkit' for people hoping to help with the humanitarian response to the crisis.
