Church offers free mortgage and rent payments

The New Light Christian Center in Houston has made the pledge ahead of a Splendor Experience event of "back to back worship" at the church's campus in the north of the Texan city.

An official from the church, which boasts four campuses across Houston, told the Christian Post: "It's just a way to encourage members to come on out to service even though it's New Year's Day."

The unnamed spokeswoman also said the offer was an annual raffle devised by the 28,000 member church's leader, Bishop I.V. Hilliard.

Writing online how it celebrates holidays, the church said: "It is the endeavor of New Light Christian Center Church to re-establish Godly character in the celebration of certain public holidays, removing the perversions of the devil and the lust of the flesh, placing God back on the throne and casting down idols which have been established by men.

"Christmas and Easter are examples of Christian celebrations whose meaning and teaching have been observed by traditional customs which have little to do with the intended purpose of these observances.

"New Year's, Valentines, and even Thanksgiving are celebrated in ways so contrary to the walk of holiness or sanctification that we, as Christians, need to take a hard look at the effect these times have on our relationship with God.

"The acid test of all behavior is in asking a simple question: "Would Jesus participate in this?" Why should this test be avoided where holidays and traditions are concerned?"
