Church of England's MP representative "humbled" by Damehood

Former-prime minister David Cameron announced in his resignation honours list that Rt Hon Caroline Spelman is going to become a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) for political and public service.

Speaking to Premier, Caroline Spelman said: "It's good for the Church of England too that this honour recognises the importance of that role; it's very important to my constituency but also for the wider country, this recognition of the role of the Second Church Estates Commissioner.

"Those prayers are much appreciated and it's my chance to say a big thank you to all your listeners who do pray for those of us in Parliament that feel called into politics as our service. Thank you."

Writing on Facebook, Caroline Spelman also said: "I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of my constituents who have put their continued faith and trust in me as their MP for over 19 years and for all of the kind messages I have received."

Serving as the Second Church Estates Commissioner, Caroline Spelman answers questions from MPs about CofE affairs and she also helps steer CofE legislation through the House of Commons.

When asked whether the controversy surrounding David Cameron's final honours list and claims of cronyism had tainted her recognition, Caroline Spelman told Premier: "It's not for me to comment on what a former-prime minister decides to put forward for nomination.

"I know that it has to go through a rigourous process of independent scrutiny and that would have included me own nomination.

Caroline Spelmen is also the Conservative MP for Meriden in the West Midland and was the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between 2010 and 2012.
