Church leaders join London protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

by Kelly Valencia

Ukrainian Archbishop Kenneth Nowakowski, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti and Coptic Archbishop Angaelos joined hundreds of people gathered in central London on Saturday to protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The demonstration started with a prayer led by Archbishop Claudio, he said: “Today we are all Ukrainians."

Some demonstrators held placards that read “Stop Putin, Stop the war,” "Putin terrorist" and "Protect Ukraine, save Europe".

The church leaders also led the crowd in singing a hymn for peace.

Demonstrators in Trafalgar Square unfurled a giant banner reading: “When the last Ukrainian soldier falls, Putin will come for you ladies & gents.”

People draped in the blue and yellow national flag of Ukraine held rallies and prayer vigils across the country on Saturday as well as in Tokyo, Rome and Berlin, among other places demanding an end to the conflict.

The UK government has been criticised for the slow response in acting against president Vlamidir Putin’s oligarchs. MPs will vote on Monday whether to speed up actions against them.
