Church buildings in England to re-open for services next week

by Cara Bentley

Places of worship will be allowed to re-open again on Wednesday 2nd December in England.

The country will move from a national lockdown back to a tier system, but each tier will allow church services in person again.

Weddings will also be allowed but wedding receptions will not be allowed under tier three. The tiers will be announced later in the week.

Boris Johnson said in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon: “From next Wednesday, people will be able to leave their home for any purpose and meet others in outdoor public spaces, subject to the rule of six. Collective worship, weddings and outdoor sports can resume and shops, personal care, gyms and the wider leisure sector can re-open.”

The tier system shows that in tier one, church attendees can interact within the rule of six, but in tiers two and three they cannot socialise with anyone outside their support bubble or household.

Services have already resumed in Wales after a two-week lockdown. Churches in Northern Ireland are not allowed to gather and churches in Scotland have not had to close for a second lockdown.
