Church activities suspended in Northern Arabia amid escalating tension

by Donna Birrell

All church activities in Northern Arabia have been suspended amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In a letter to the faithful, Bishop Aldo Berardi, Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia appealed to Christians to remain calm and attentive to safety measures following explosions in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. He wrote: "In this moment of uncertainty, I ask all the faithful of the Vicariate to remain calm, united in prayer, and attentive to everyone’s safety. Please carefully follow the instructions of civil authorities and adopt all necessary precautions in your homes, workplaces and parishes.”

Bishop Berardi has invited priests in the region to gather and celebrate a Mass for peace on Sunday evening.

He's also encouraged particular care and attention should be shown to the most vulnerable and called for prayer from the international community at this time.

Missile exchanges continued on Sunday after Iran confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader - and vowed revenge.

Iranian retaliatory missiles are being intercepted in Israel and other Middle East countries - with damage reported to airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

UK nationals in the UAE are being urged to register their presence with the Foreign Office amid the escalating tension.
