Christians in China told to 'lay low' during Winter Olympics

by Sophie Drew

It’s believed Christian ministers in China are being forced to “lay low” during the Winter Olympic Games.

Church leaders have already been forced to alter their teachings, and rewrite the bible, in order to suit communist values.

Some are even being told to talk more about communism than about Jesus Christ during church services.

Concern surrounding the Winter Olympic Games continues to grow, with many calling for a diplomatic boycott of the Games due to China’s record of human rights abuses – particularly against religious groups.

However, confronting the plight of Christians in China is not as easy as one may think – Henrietta Blyth, CEO of Open Doors, says it’s an incredibly complicated matter.

She said: “It's very tricky, because the Chinese government already appear to think that the Church is an infiltration from the West, so it is difficult.

"If we make Christianity political, then that feeds into that narrative, which I don't think strengthens the Church in China and helps our persecuted brothers and sisters.

“So I think it's important to make people aware of what's going on in China, with the different religions, and obviously with our persecuted Church family.

“I think it's also really important to pray for the church there, that the Lord will strengthen the church, that the Church will continue to be salt and light within China, that the Lord's will continue to grow the church across China. “
