Christians called to pray for police

by Eno Adeogun

The National Day of Prayer for the police also calls on Christians to pray that officers have success in bringing offenders to justice.

Paul Netherton, Deputy Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police told Premier about the importance of the day.

He explained: "Policing has been extremely challenging over the last year or so. We've had significant terrorist attacks; we've had the real tragedy of Grenfell. We've seen the big rise in knife crime... in London and elsewhere.

"There's a lot less police officers as there used to be and they can really feel it.

"For me being a Christian - that ability in being able to rely on faith... allows me to deal with those challenging situations."

His words were echoed by Lee Russell, executive director of the Christian Police Association who encourages Christians to get involved with the day.

He told Premier: "We're just asking that people can just pray for the police service. It's really important - if we believe in the power of prayer, then we should pray for those who are protecting our communities and for the wider police and family.

"We should pray for their safety while on duty... and pray to help them make difficult resourcing decisions.

"Policing is a difficult, demanding and dangerous job - and as has been seen and spoken about many times over recent years - there are finite resources. Every day officers have to make... difficult decisions based on risk and threat and harm in order to actually respond to those calls."
